The first session with Carmel, British female jazz singer rather than pop/rock. I heard that she asked Francis to back up her, and they had only five-hour-rehearsal in Paris before this show, plus, they came to the hall - Parc des Expo just before the show started. So they couldn't have enough time to do soundcheck. In fact, the audience were in the hall when they did soundcheck and they got applause!
The musicians back up her are, Paolo Lerazzi on keyboards and Chris Spedding Band - Francis Campello on bass, Jean-Michel Rinaldi on guitars, backing vocals and percussion, and David Salkin on drums.
Frankly speaking, I'm not much interested in her jazzy songs and I feel she was not in her best condition. But the show was totally great. Chris Spedding was Chris Spedding. He played the same licks which you have heard somewhere, at the gig and records, and it was excellent and variety- better than his solo show as a guitarist/artist. He didn't have to sing and conduct the band. I don't think there were much his fans there because of no advertisement of his appearance, but just Carmel, but all the audience seemed to recognize his ability. I wonder he could have done well if he didn't have any rehearsal with her. He trained himself those things in jazz-rock days. He is inspired by the audience and drums. When both are good, he can play the better.
On "Love Me", a Presley's song, of course, she sang backed by just his guitar and three guys - Francis, Jean-Michel and Paolo took backing vocals at one microphone! And on the last song "Sally", the openning act Sherif Mbow Band comes onstage and they got a festival there. Their percussionist with a little drum (African drum?) was dancing and drumming and Spedding replied by guitar to him, they got happy conversation without words. Totally good show. I went to Europe for this show with Carmel (than his solo shows followed), but it was worth going.
